Part 1 – The concept that slaves are better off with their masters than they would be on their own is an unjustifiable misconception. Slavery limits a variety of freedoms to humanity. For instance, slaves are denied the freedom of movement since they are limited to work within the master’s jurisdiction. Slaves are also denied the freedom of expression. They cannot raise any of their concerns neither are they consulted when masters aremaking rules or polices that have a direct impact on them. Subsequently, slavery subject slaves to inhuman living conditions. Their dietary needs and healthcare are not catered toadequately. Slaves are compelled to work for long hours withouta single penny. They are also tortured and in other instances they are killed. An example is where Tom in Uncle Tom’s Cabinnovel is whipped to death for not revealing the location of escapee slaves (Stowe, 201). Therefore, limited freedom, inhuman living conditions, torture and murder are some of the vices that prove slavery is worse for the slave than for the master.
Part 2 – Linda Brent underwent numerous challenges as a slave while in the Flint’s household. First, her dietary needs were not adequately catered to. She is not given full meals and survives on scarce food. Linda is also subjected to high level of cruelty in the Flint’s residence. Mrs. Flint orders her not to wear shoes because they produce sound while she walks. Linda states that, “She then sent me a long distance, on an errand. As I went through the snow, my bare feet tingled. That night I was very hoarse; and I went to bed thinking the next day would find me sick, perhaps dead” (Jacobs, 32). On the other hand, Dr. Flint sexually harass Linda when she only 15 years. Dr. Flint constantly reminds Linda that she is his property and can do anything he wishes with her.

**Dr. Hall/ essay pro, respond to the question below**
Hello,
Would you consider Jacobs’s female characters in “Incidents…” to be good representations of strong female characters for the story’s time period and overall for history?
What are some of their more outstanding characteristics and can you compare them to another significant female character in literature and/or history?
