ASSIGNMENT: Come and Go: responses after viewing Beckett’s play
Purpose: Begin the process of talking about theatre in terms of what you think about things —
Objective: Get you to look at what you SEE, what you assume about things based on what you see, and get you to draw some conclusions after thinking about what you see. “I don’t know” is not an option on this assignment. Nor is “it could be…” “maybe it is…” etc. Watch the play, write down what you saw… and DECIDE what you think about what you saw. And pay attention to the questions – if you just do what each is asking it will lead you to the final two.
Grading: You are being graded on effort, meaning how thorough you are in your responses. As mentioned above, one question leads to the next most of the time, so if you are incomplete in one response it will impact the rest …. I’m not looking for “one right answer.” I am looking for you to communicate your response to this little play.
Note: work submitted after the DUE date will have points deducted. The deduction starts you at 50% of the original points offered; however, it can go up or down from there depending on the effort you apply to it.
I want you to not research the play for this assignment –just watch it a few times (it’s only 7 minutes) and then respond to the questions. I ask this because it is so boring for me to read the same “wikpedia” enhanced responses…. I got into teaching at a late age so I could be exposed to fresh ideas and viewpoints on old material – so help me out and give just your opinion. There will be no deductions for getting something wrong – when you read the questions you will see, they ask what you see and what you think. How can those be wrong? You completed your personality test and you know you are unique – a product of genes and your upbringing. Please do this on your own. If we were in class I would say this, “if you are not going to be you and state your opinion, who is?”
