General Guidelines:

APA style
Length = at least one and a half pages of text and no more than two full pages of text; a References page and a title page do not count toward page number totals (you are NOT required to include a title page, but it is good practice if you so choose; if you decide not to use a title page, I will expect that minimal room on the first page – one line, your name only – is devoted to your name/identifying information)
Double-spaced from the title page through the References page
Page numbers on each page of the document
1” margins on all sides
11- or 12-point Times New Roman or Arial font, from the start of the title page through the end of the References page
The final, separate page (does not count toward 1.5 to 2 page total) should be a References page with a minimum of two references (one of which can be your class textbook); each entry on the References page must also show up at least once as an in-text citation, and each in-text citation must be included on the References page; please use SCHOLARLY sources, namely books and scholarly journal articles, as your sources

Purpose and Topic:

For this paper, you will choose ONE of the two paper topics below. Papers attempting to answer both questions within the same paper will not be considered for credit. The major purpose of this paper is for the reader to be able to see your mastery and application of class material in your paper. It should be clear that you understand psychological theories and have the ability to apply them to real-life examples and your experiences.

Topic Options:

*Please clearly state your topic at the beginning of your paper. Remember, choose only ONE of the following two options.*

1) As human beings, we are constantly learning, and you have learned countless things since the moment you were born. Classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and social learning explain the process by which we learn. Choose one example of learning from your own life and walk the reader through your experience of learning. Demonstrate how your current behaviors came to be as the result of two of the three types of learning. In other words, highlight how any two (classical, operant, or social learning) impacted your learning process for the example you choose. For example, if you want to explain how you learned to care for your elderly grandmother, walk the reader through this learning process, highlighting how you developed this habit through the principles of operant conditioning AND social learning. Clearly define your terms and apply your example to class concepts.

2) Watch a movie or television show and analyze the characters or content/plot with regard to the topics we cover in class. For instance, you can watch the TV show “Modern Family” and discuss examples of development you see in the family members inter-generationally, evidence of sensation or perception you see in the show, personality characteristics evident in the show, and so on. For this option, you are required to spend NO MORE THAN a short paragraph discussing show content; in other words, rather than seeing you telling the story of what happened in an episode, I want you to highlight content ONLY to bring the psychological concepts to life. Your major goal should be to highlight psychological principles and apply what you are learning in class to a popular culture example. If you choose this option, you should apply AT LEAST TWO and NO MORE THAN THREE psychological topics to the film/show. Therefore, rather than walking through the chapters and talking about Modern Family characters with regard to neuroscience AND development AND sexuality/gender AND sensation/perception AND learning, etc., I want you to focus on two to three psychological areas and thoroughly explain how they are evident in the film/show.
