In Essay 2, you will summarize and enter that conversation, but you are not providing your own answer to the RQ yet. The emphasis in this essay is what other sources say, and how they are related.
Research: From a well-researched pool, pick out 5 or more sources that directly answer your RQ. Some of these can be sources you used in Essay 1, but most should be new. The goal here is to pick the most reliable and current sources on all sides of the debate.
Transition Paragraph: Instead of an introduction, write a brief transition paragraph that a) briefly summarizes how researchers answer your RQ and b) indicates which research makes the strongest claim. This could be a short as two sentences. (Some researchers argue that X is the answer to my research question. Others argue that Y is the answer.)
Five Body Paragraphs: Body paragraphs should summarize the how a current, reliable source answers your research question. You should state the author(s)’ name and title along with the main idea or findings in the topic sentence, using your own words. In the remaining sentences of each paragraph, go on to explain the supporting ideas. For example, James Paul Gee explains that video games enforce learning (thesis), and then he explains three ways they improve learning (supporting ideas). Important: Do not include supporting details like examples, statistics, details, etc. Instead of details, focus on summarizing main and supporting ideas that answer your research question.
