For this assignment, you will write an editorial expressing your view of impression management, and how we present ourselves to the world around us. You will gather and use evidence by conducting an interview and by locating sources to back up and defend your viewpoint about how we present ourselves to others.
Read chapter 8, Self and Identity, from our course e-book. Read also the supplemental readings from the Principles of Social Psychology OER source, 4.2 chapter, The feeling self: Self esteem, and the 6.2 chapter Inferring disposition using causal attribution.
Research the topics self-presentation/impression management, self as social actor, self as autobiographical author, self-monitoring and self-serving attributions (also known as the Self-serving bias) by locating sources on your own.
Interview 1 person you know either in person or by phone asking them questions about how they use impression management to present themselves to others. When do they self-present? On social media, do they use IM to present a certain image? Ask them questions about whether they have ever applied self-serving attributions to explain their failures and successes. Ask them questions about how they see themselves as a social actor, what roles do they play in their lives? Please make sure that you don’t use your participant’s real names if they don’t want you to. You can use aliases for them in your editorial instead.
After you research these topics, read all the chapters for this editorial, and interview someone, write a 500- word editorial expressing your viewpoint of self-presentation and the motives behind impression management. Use at least one of the concepts from number 2 (self-presentation and impression management are considered one topic) in your editorial to describe how people see themselves and how people present an image to others, and what benefits or consequences there might be in using Impression management. (see a list of suggested topics to focus on in your editorial)
Consider the following: Who is your audience? Do you want to write an editorial to college graduates who are looking for employment to encourage them to use impression management? Or do you want to write to people who are single and ready to mingle, and let them know that using impression management in social media has its advantages, but also disadvantages? (See list of suggested topics below).
Please double space your paper, and remember this is a persuasive paper, so you want to convince your reader that your argument is valid. Start your editorial by stating your argument and create a fun title that lets the audience know what the focus of your editorial is.
Remember to back up your own arguments by providing evidence from your sources. Discuss specific experts in the field and what their views are, discuss statistics, and specific authors and facts from the research you located.
Also, please add in a few sentences about your interview. Please do not add in the questions and answers from your interview, but instead, summarize the results from your interview. What was the main theme from your interview? Did your interviewee say they use impression management skills to impress others? Which of the impression management strategies do they use? When have they used the self-serving bias, and what did they accomplish by using the self-serving bias? Summarize in your editorial what your interviewee said about their opinions of impression management and how they use self-presentation in their own lives.
Be sure to include counterarguments to present opposing views about impression management and self-monitoring. Locate a source that backs up the counterargument. But always negate the counterarguments by giving reasons and evidence that directly refutes the opposing views. Please read the general editorial guidelines.
Editorials need to be written in your own words so make sure you are not copying ANY information from sources. You will not need to provide in-text citations, but you will need to add your sources in APA style at the bottom of your editorial in a reference list. You want to refer to your sources in your editorial, and add in specific facts, and specific studies, and specific experts in the field. This is quite common when editorial staff are writing their articles, but you should use your own words and you don’t have to cite within your article. However, if you do add in a quote from a source, then you will want to properly cite the quote by putting it in quotation marks, and adding an in-text citation.
