Please write a 5 paragraph Analysis essay (2.5- 3 pages) on either :
Anzaldúa’s “How to Tame A Wild Tongue” link for article https://www.sausd.us/cms/lib/CA01000471/Centricity/Domain/457/Anzaldua-Wild-Tongue.pdf or
Cofer’s “The Myth of the Latin Woman” link for article
To write this essay, formulate a thesis/argument focusing on one of these questions. Answering the other questions can lead you to your subpoints. You don’t need to answer the questions in order. Make this your own.
How/Why does Anzaldúa or Cofer counter racial and ethnic stereotypes placed on Latin women to define their identity. In this essay, consider what stereotypes follow Latinas throughout their life?
Are the authors confined by their race or empowered by it?
How do they use their Chicana or Puerto Rican identity to their advantage?
How are they forced to assimilate, and is this a positive or negative experience?
Can they define themselves in their own way, or are they always defined by Anglo society?
Anzaldúa sees her Chicana identity as formed from more than just language–it incorporates food, movies, music, family?
How does she use all of these aspects of culture to define herself?
How does patriarchy sexualize the Latin woman?
How does cultural confusion hinder the Latin woman (specifically the Puerto Rican woman in Cofer’s case) from acculturating or assimilating?
What are the mixed messages that are confusing Puero Rican girls?
How/why do both authors pop culture/musicals in order to make her point about the stereotyping of Latin women?
How/why do both authors use so many personal anecdotes in order to define their identity in the opposition to mainstream American society?
While Anzaldúa uses her own imagery to define her identity (wild tongue, for example), Cofer seems confined by the imagery placed upon her (Maria, Evita, waitress). Show how this works throughout the essay and why?
2. How are Anzaldúa and Cofer defining their identity through language (whether it be English/Spanish/or a combination of both)? Can they adjust language to reflect who they are? Is language confining or freeing for them?
Anzaldúa mixes multiple languages and dialects together, making her more than just bilingual.
Why does she do this and how does it define her identity?
Anzaldúa believes that anyone who wants to limit her language, box her in, or define her in ways that are not her own is committing linguistic terrorism.
Thesis Paragraph Components:
(must be in this order)
What: What = the main ideas in the text. What the text is about (summary of the key points). Provides the context for your argument
How: the rhetorical strategy used to convey the main ideas (style/genre) (This could be writing bilingually, using personal anecdotes, using pop culture references, etc)
Why= the purpose of the text. Why is the author writing this text? What is his/her agenda/purpose? Note: This is the main argument of YOUR essay—this is what you’re trying to prove.
Thesis Paragraphs Should NOT:
provide a hook or any personal information,
be over-generalized or vague,
provide support, examples or quotes because these should be saved for the body of the essay
Body Paragraph Structure (3 paragraphs)
Each paragraph should develop one of the main points expressed in the thesis paragraph. That’s why there are 3 main points in your thesis paragraph.
Topic sentence provides the argument for the paragraph
Several sentences developing the argument and providing context. Note, this is the same as your summary essay.
Introduction of a quote using a signal phrase (something as simple as Cofer states,
Give the quote: Make sure you choose quotes that lead to analysis or interpretation, ones with rich imagery or personal anecdotes, or a literary reference. Make sure it’s not a surface level quote that doesn’t offer much more than basic information. (Quotes that are under 4 typed lines should be included in the line, “Cofer states, “………” but quotes over 4 lines should be blocked. See my Summary vs Analysis handout under the Analysis sample I wrote)
At least 4 sentences analyzing the wording or imagery of the quote and link it to the argument you are making in this paragraph. (Again, see the sample analysis in the Summary vs Analysis handout.
Conclusion: Corresponds to the WHY from your thesis paragraph. Develop the WHY for 3-4 sentences. What is the author trying to convince you of? Why is she writing this text?
