Anzaldúa sees her Chicana identity as formed from more than just language–it incorporates food, movies, music, family?
How does she use all of these aspects of culture to define herself?
How does patriarchy sexualize the Latin woman?
How does cultural confusion hinder the Latin woman (specifically the Puerto Rican woman in Cofer’s case) from acculturating or assimilating?
What are the mixed messages that are confusing Puero Rican girls?
How/why do both authors pop culture/musicals in order to make her point about the stereotyping of Latin women?
How/why do both authors use so many personal anecdotes in order to define their identity in the opposition to mainstream American society?
While Anzaldúa uses her own imagery to define her identity (wild tongue, for example), Cofer seems confined by the imagery placed upon her (Maria, Evita, waitress). Show how this works throughout the essay and why?
