Indigenous studies Discussion Assignment

Description
Part I
Watch my lecture video: tps://youtu.be/vdLJJKkIfGw
recorded it during the Spring INDG 100 course. Some of the discussion in it is not relevant (disregard the discussion re the response paper), however, I feel the video still contains some helpful information
related to the first Chapters of Legacy.
For today please have read Chapters 1, and 2 from Legacy: Trauma, Story, and Indigenous Healing by Suzanne Methot (available free of charge through FNUniv library homepage). This is the new link to the Legacy e-text. https://www-deslibris-ca.libproxy.uregina.ca/ID/479971
In this quote from Chapter 1 (page 2), Methot identifies that “Indigenous people carry multiple layers of unresolved grief and loss, and they suffer from chronic
physical illness related to their emotional and spiritual states.” This quote could be considered the thesis statement for her book.
Part II
Please watch the YouTube video entitled ‘Dakota 38 (Plus 2)’ (if for any reason this link does not work for you simply Google or do a YouTube search for the title and look for the full-length version of the video): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pX6FBSUyQI
**Triger Warning**
I want to give you a heads-up that there are some hard to watch scenes in this video. This video is powerful, emotional, enlightening, educational with multiple revelations. It is a ‘story’ of change for both the Dakota riders and the non-Indigenous members of the communities they pass through.
As food for thought and to offer some direction to you as you watch, think about the following questions.
Hint: I don’t want you to hand in, but may be similar to what I will ask on the midterm exam 🙂
1. Why are the Dakota riders going on this ride? What do they hope to gain/accomplish?
2. Pay attention to BillyRay DuMarce’s dialogue at different points in the video and his unwritten message to us at the very end of the video?
3. Pay attention to the spiritual attributes of the horse.
4. How does this ride impact the non-Indigenous people in the communities the riders pass through?
5. Reconciliation is a word that we often hear today. What are some examples of reconciliation within the film?
6. Pay special attention to the dialogue one of the riders/speakers provide in minutes 55:15 through 56:25 of the video. “Our people suffer from something…a deep embedded genetic depression.” Think about what he is saying in light of what you are reading in your chapters this week.
