Below you will find links to journalistic accounts of some contemporary aspect of the American criminal justice system from the Marshall Project.  You are required to read the journalistic accounts (Note: for the first assignment only respond to the article labeled JA1 below) and construct at least a 2 page response to the article.  Each response should be typed, double spaced, and you must use 12 point Times New Roman Font.  You are allowed and encouraged to use other sources in your response, however, if you do, you must cite your sources within your response by using APA (American Psychological Association) format and you must also construct a references section at the end of the response.
 
Each response is worth 50 points and your grade for each response is calculated as follows:
 

Summary of the content of the article (maximum of 20 points). This summary should not exceed one double spaced page of your response.

 

Excellent (20 points)

– Provides a very thorough and clear and concise summary of the article context and content.
 

Very good (18 points)

– Provides a clear and concise summary of the article context and content.
 

Satisfactory (15 points)

– Provides a clear but shallow summary of the article; may be excessively brief or may include some extraneous information.
 

Minimally Responsive (5 points)

– Provides a somewhat muddled, unclear and rambling summary of the article.
 

Personal Reaction (maximum of 20 points). Your reaction should be at least one double spaced page.

 

Excellent (20 points)

Thoroughly describes your personal reaction to the article; includes discussion of the relevant issues within the article in addition to linking some aspect of the article to the course reading/discussion to date.

 

Very good (18 points)

Describes your personal reaction to the article; includes a simplistic discussion of the relevant issues within the article and link to the course readings/discussion.

 

Satisfactory (15 points)

Describes your personal reaction to the article; includes no discussion of the relevant issues within the article or the course readings/dicussion.

 

Minimally responsive (5 points)

Attempts to describe your personal reaction to the article, but lacks a logical flow and reaction is muddled; no discussion of any relevant issues in the article.

 

Grammar, mechanics, and APA style for references and citations (maximum of 10 points)

Satisfactory (7 points)

Contains mostly correct info regarding article title, author name, and article source and date. Contains frequent errors in grammatical conventions, spelling, and punctuation; errors begin to interfere with paper’s meaning. Inconsistently uses APA

 

Minimally responsive (2 points)

Contains incorrect info regarding article title, author name, and article source and date. Contains numerous errors in grammatical conventions, spelling, and punctuation; substantially interferes with paper’s meaning.
