Now that you have a sense of this overarching concept of Postcolonial Theory, I want to introduce you to some of the leading voices that have come out of the movement to call attention to the effects of colonialism and the continued presence of the imperialistic ideology of Western superiority. Both of the women I have chosen, here, are best selling novelists, as well as outspoken activists for what is sometimes called the “Global South” which is a term used to refer to the areas on the planet that were invaded and colonized by Europe from the 14th to 20th centuries. Both of these speakers will deepen our insight into the specific, long-lasting, individual- and community-felt ramifications of colonialism/imperialism.
Read and watch either Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s speech “The Danger of a Single Story” or Arundati Roy’s speech “Come September.” Transcripts for both can be found in the Course Reader and the videos can be found on YouTube.
Then, write a brief (1-2 paragraph) response to your chosen speech, connecting the theme(s) to what you took away from the lesson on Postcolonial Theory. How does the speaker address concerns related to Colonialism? Or the spread of Western ideology, religion, politics, and capitalism? Or the opportunities/dangers of globalization?
Not to sound like a broken record, but find something small to focus on. One or two points that jumped out at you. Maybe talk about why you were particularly drawn to those ideas or how they relate to what you are seeing in the US and around the world today.
Or, hey, both of these speeches were given prior to the intense role that social media plays today and I always wonder how that medium fits into the increasing accessibility of multiple stories and resistance to colonialism/imperialism. I mean, I follow half of these writers on Instagram so now I get not only their art, but an insight into their lives.
Include at least one direct quote of a word, line, or passage from the speech.
After you have posted, read through some of your peers’ posts and respond to at least two.
