The practice reflections assignments ask you to think carefully about your interactions in certain common practice situations, how and why you react or interact as you do, and what practice skills you use and why. For each reflection, engage in a real practice situation as described, then write a verbatim account of PART of your interaction, and analyse it by responding to the questions below. For example, for the first practice reflection, you should interact with your supervisor in supervision. If you do not have a supervisor, is there someone else in that role with whom you can interact, such as a higher-level supervisor, a superior in another context, someone else’s supervisor, or an instructor? Do not ask a friend or colleague; your interaction should be with someone you respect and perhaps fear who is in a supervisory position.
There will be (4) assignments where you will reflect on engagement and assessment practice skills. Choose THREE of the four. Due dates are noted on the syllabus, but you may hand in a different reflection from what is recommended. For example, if you get to see a client early in your field placement, you may hand in the client engagement reflection on November 14 and delay the team meeting until September.
Practice Reflection 1 will focus on a team meeting, case consultation, planning meeting or organizational discussion where multiple participant discuss some part of the organization (clients, planning, organizational structure, etc.). Be sure you speak in this meeting!
For each assignment, you may wish to use a grid like a process recording, where you record your interaction on lines and then in a column next to the interaction indicate what skills you were using during the interaction. Then, for each, answer the following questions.
· Provide a short description of the setting (including whether the interaction was virtual or in person), the participants, and the purpose of the meeting or session.
· Provide at least 5 verbatim exchanges with the supervisor, team, organization, client, or group,
· Cite at least 5 skills that you are using or considering using if you are preparing for a session. Using APA format, reference each skill that your including in this reflection.
· Discuss why you chose or would consider using each of the skills,
· What was the effect in the interaction with the individual/group/team/organization?
· What were you thinking and feeling as you interacted with the individual/group/team/organization?
· Discuss how confident and competent you were in your use of the five skills,
· Discuss any obstacles you encountered in trying to use particular skills or in the interaction,
· Discuss what you learned from the interaction you are analyzing that you will either do differently in the future or continue to do. Remember to include your thinking about the obstacles as well and how you might address these in the future.
· Finally reflect on the session considering the use of power and privilege and your own experience as a practitioner in this interaction and summarize these reflections.
· Reference your text and other practice literature using APA format.
