Reflective Writing Poetry Analysis

Poetry Analysis
This formal composition will be an analysis COMPARING ANY poem we have read except for “Eating Alone” (which will be the exam poem) to one of the following: a story we have read; another poem we have read; or a song (any). Your composition must analyze the use of three elements of literature to convey a shared theme.
Possible Elements:
-Plot (including foreshadowing)
-Plot compared to form (rhyme scheme/endstopping/enjambment): Do the two follow a standard pattern, or do they –deviate in some way that is significant?
-Endstopping/Enjambment (could be to emphasize; could be to create tone)
-Rhyme Types (perfect; slant; eye; end/internal)
-Alliteration (could be to emphasize; could be to create tone)
-Diction (double entendre; could be to create tone)
-Syntax (could be to emphasize; could be to create tone)
-Point of View (remember, this is the author’s choice of narrator)
-Tone (writer’s attitude toward the subject)
Explore the poem and story/poem/song in depth, looking at which choices seem to have been made with theme in mind. These are the elements you will want to analyze.
*Choose carefully so as not to create repetitive analysis in your paper. If you find yourself using the same passage, make sure that your explanation of what the writer is doing is vastly different and very element-specific.
Format for a Successful Analysis:
Brief introduction to the theme to be explored in the analysis
Brief synopsis of the poem
