GOAL:  You will analyze the various sensate data used to choose a favourite snack food.  You will describe the principles of sensation and perception used in the choice of snack foods, and you will identify the manner by which snack foods can become addictive.  The ability to do so will be demonstrated in the completion of this discussion.

Please be sure to have completed the Sensation and Perception Homework page and to have reviewed the PowerPoints, both of which are in Module 12.
The process described below if from the homework page-if you have already completed these steps, you do not have to repeat it.  However, it may help to refresh your memory of the experience…start with selecting your favourite snack food-then follow the steps as outlined below.

NOTE:  It is important to complete each of the steps below as directed in order to achieve the maximum benefit from this exercise.  Please write down your responses as you go as they will form the basis for the discussion to follow.

Which snack food did you choose?  For which reason(s)?
Pick up a piece of it and carefully examine it.  What is appealing to you in terms of its look and feel?  Be specific and describe what gets your attention.
Hold it to your nose and smell it.  Again, what is appealing?
Put a piece in your mouth and let it sit for a bit-in other words, do not eat it right away.  How does it feel (smooth, firm, moist, etc.)? What are the different tastes (salty, sweet, sour, bitter, umami (savory)) that you detect?  Do they all come at once?  Finally, chew it.  What sound does it make? (NOTE:  You might need a new piece since the first part of this may have softened it-use another piece and bite it right away.)
Which of the above were the sensations?  Which were the perceptions?  How do these impact your emotions and the motivation to eat the snack?
